University of Louisville football fans are hungry.

Get off to a good start Sunday, a new attendance record would seem to be a strong likelihood for UofL this season. A record number of 43,500 season football tickets have been sold, eclipsing the previous mark of last season’s 43,300.

As Charlie Strong might say, UofL football attendance has only scratched the surface and needs to take the next step. Louisville can do much better, especially given the potential of this year’s team. Give fans a contender and get out of the way.

The single-season attendance record is an average of 50,648 per game, set during the first year of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium expansion two years ago. A rocky start last season with losses to Marshall and Florida International led to a dip in average attendance to 48,538 last season.

The game against Kentucky is close to a sellout, and could surpass the 55,327 that showed up for the UK game in the first game of the 2010 season. That is if the leftovers from Hurricane Isaac aren’t a major threat game day.

The other best attended games to date:

2010 – Cincinnati, 55,106.
2011 – Marshall, 53,267
2010 – West Virginia, 51,772
2011 – Pittsburgh, 51,321
2010 – UConn, 48,951
2011 – Rutgers, 48,435
2010 – Memphis, 48,427
2011 – Florida International, 47,228

Just scratching the surface.
