The part of the loss that still gets to me is the one about Syracuse never having lost a Senior Day football game.

That what was posted in the Louisville locker room prior to last Saturday’s game against Syracuse. ABC TV kept showing the cutout of SU quarterback Rya Nassib with the quote. An odd thing for an individual to use to motivate his team or which could be used as bulletin board material for the opposition. Who keeps records of such stats anyway?

A check of the Syracuse football record book indicates that the 1892 version of Syracuse football lost all eight games it played that year. Possibly all the Syracuse players were underclassmen on that 1892 team? Or maybe they just didn’t honor seniors back in those days.

Or maybe Nassib was only referring to his own record on Senior Day? Turns out that Saturday’s game against Louisville was the first Senior Day game Syracuse had won since 2009, according to Nune’s Magician, a Syracuse blog:

This was Syracuse’s first win on Senior Day since 2009, Ryan’s first season. And there’s no record that anyone can find that backs up that Nassib ever said that. Obviously he wouldn’t, unless they somehow culled that quote from his sophomore season in some random interview.

So that means the Louisville coaches made up a fake quote to motivate their team, which would be weird and sad even if not for the fact that while working under said assumption, they still went out and lost by 20 to a team with five losses.

Which only makes the humiliation even less palatable for UofL football fans.
