Shoni-Schimmel-2-18-2014Shoni Schimmel became the second player in the history of the University of Louisville women’s basketball program to surpass the 2,000-point mark during the 28th game of her senior season Thursday. She scored 15 points in UofL’s 81-62 win over Houston to improve the third-ranked Cardinals’ record to 26 winw in 28 games this season, also the best start in the program’s history.

Schimmel’s achievement puts her in pretty exclusive company. The only other UofL player to do so was Angel McCoughtry, the program’s all-time leading scorer who totaled 2,779 points during her four-year career from 2006 to 2009.

Not to panic, but Shoni’s appearances at KFC Yum! Center are coming to an end. Two remaining home games and they’re against two familiar antagonists — Rutgers on Sunday at 3 p.m., and on Senior Night against UConn on March 3rd at 7 p.m.

In other words, Shoni has only two more regular season games at home.  She deserves a packed house on Senior Night. Players like her don’t come around very often.

UofL football coach Bobby Petrino was on hand to see Shoni Schimmel reach the 2,000-point mark.

  1. Shoni has meant so much to this basketball team and we will certainly miss her and her fellow senior teammates next season Tia, Antonita, and Asia. Anyone who has not yet made it to a women’s game better get off their butts and show up for Sunday’s game, and the season home finale vs. UConn,
. Oh and wear pink Sunday, if you have it in your Cardswear. Our Lady Cards play exciting basketball. BTW, lower bowl of Yum is already sold out. Upper bowl tix are $5. Go Cards!
