A young couple we know mailed us a “Save The Date” request for Saturday, Sept. 15. Nice guy, pretty girl, meant for each other.

The last time we saw them was at the Louisville-Pittsburgh game last season. We know they’re football fans. The man’s future mother-in-law called the observer, saying the young man had left his tickets in Cincinnati, wondering if we had access to extra tickets. Fortunately the observer did that day

Delivered them to the couple at Papa John’s, chatted several minutes about UofL football, and how we never missed a game. They couldn’t wait to get to their seats. We had the distinct impression they were die hard Louisville fans.

Imagine our surprise, then, to learn that they plan on getting married Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. That would be the beginning of the second half against North Carolina. But the couple will be in a sanctuary, nowhere near a football stadium.

Now we have great respect for the institution of marriage, having enjoyed the blessings of a commitment for several decades. There is a time for everything, however, and Saturdays in the fall are reserved for football.

Sorry, kids, we wish you the best of luck. Going to have to miss the vows. Fall weddings are ill-timed and unfortunate for football fans. If you agree, sign the guest register at Fall Weddings Suck.

(Update: Some good friends, who live and breath UofL football, report that their son will be getting married on the same day in Savannah. To a UK fan, of all things. Any one want to trade places with them?)

  1. Kudos to my buddies Sean and Samantha who have wisely decided to marry on Friday, October 19th. True Cardinal fans, indeed.

  2. Not to worry, Observer, but with a post such as that, when the invites list has to be whittled down some more, your name will be first one off. But then, you would be off the hook, right? Go Cards!!!
