Any doubt TV rules colllege football?

If the future of the college game is inextricably tied to network television rights, the Big East Conference may finally have someone with the right credentials.

Mike Aresco, who has served as Executive Vice President of Programming for CBS since 2008, has apparently been tabbed as the new Big East Commissioner.  He has been with CBS since 1996, in charge of programming and the network’s sports properties.

He handled the network’s contract negotiations with the NCAA for the rights to the men’s basketball tournament. He also negotiated the network’s 15-year deal with the Southeastern Conference for football and basketball coverage.

Aresco was also involved in the development of CBS Sports.com, which has become a major online player in streaming of sports programming that includes GameTracker and other live game action.

Some knee-jerkers are saying he’s over-qualified for the job, as if that’s even possible with all the challenges facing the Big East.

  1. Great hire! But Big East teams must win crucial non-conference games that change the perception of the league or it won’t matter who they hire for the job. Too steal a quote from the great Al Davis ‘Just Win Baby’!!

  2. He’s also the guy you made into a bulleyes for darts due to the Louisville-Sienna game…. and now he’s in charge of the conference you play in.

    That’s a hoot.
