Luke Hancock of the University of Louisville has been chosen from among 280 athletes to carry the U.S. flag at the opening of the World University Games in Russia.
Opening ceremonies are set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with Team USA playing its first game on Sunday against the United Arab Emirates.
As that game gets going, there will be a big Louisville flag hanging outside the family’s home in Roanoke, Va. Right next to it will be an American flag, placed there when Van Hancock was informed her son made the U.S. team.
