Another big catch for the University of Louisville women’s basketball team:

Lauren Okafor, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound power forward from New Haven, Conn., has made a verbal commitment to play with the Lady Cards. She will make her debut in Louisville’s brand spanking new basketball arena in 2010. She is considered the No. 84 prospect in the country by ESPN.com.

Jumpoffplus.com noted this after seeing her in the Peach State Basketball Camp in Buford, Georgia.:

“Lauren Okafor was a beast inside the painted area all afternoon. Okafor, who along with great size for the post position has very good footwork, was a difficult matchup for most of the other post players in camp. Her strength throughout the day was her ability to battle on the boards and just outwork people.”

Here’s a video from the New Haven Register:

Season Ticket Sales — The Lady Cards are apparently getting a big bounce off their most successful season, which included the championship game in the NCAA tournament. New season ticket buyers are being assigned to the second level at Freedom Hall for the first time ever next season, the last at the Kentucky Exposition Center facility.

  1. Looks like Sonja was right. Lauren is no longer shown as a verbal commitment to Louisville on All Star Girls Report.

  2. Sonja starting to make a habit of undercutting Jeff Walz’s recruiting efforts. This is the second straight recruit she has planted seeds of doubt in the last couple of months. Recruits do read these blogs.

  3. The word on Lauren is that she is a beast on the boards but will need to work on her up and down the court quickness and shot. She’s very good at putbacks but suffers from accuracy problems outside the paint. If she can develop a consistant 8-10 foot jumper to go with her above average rebounding and inside the paint skills, she could be a valuable addition for the Lady Cards. She has her senior season to do that. Several sources consider her verbal to Louisville one that might be swayed if closer schools come calling and she was on berecruited.com for awhile touting her services to the coaching fraternity before the Cards got a verbal from her.
