Edgar Sosa returns to Madison Square Garden again Thursday when the University of Louisville basketball team meets St. John’s. This trip is special for Sosa because he’s a senior with something to prove.

The much-maligned U of L guard is attempting to position himself for a future career in professional basketball. Sosa recently wondered aloud why he wasn’t getting more buzz in mock draft picks, believing he can contribute at the next level.

Pitino, meanwhile, has continued  to advise him that his stock will increase when he starts looking for his teammates, finding open shooters, making them better players.

New York City is home for Sosa but it has not been kind to him over the last three seasons. Louisville won three games at Madison Square Garden (including the Big East Tournament last season) while losing three in six previous visits during Sosa’s college years. Sosa, however, has been less than impressive in those six games, credited only with a total of 31 points, 10 assists and 11 turnovers.

Sosa wants people to recognize that he has made significant strides this season. But he may be tempted to put on an offensive display in New York. If he succumbs to that temptation, he harms not only his own prospects but his team’s as well.

Not much room for error. Find the open man, Edgar.

  1. A TV guy described Sosa as a player that can make plays to keep both Louiville and their opponent in the game.

  2. Sosa can dream and work hard like we all do for things in our lives.
If he just listens to the coach and keeps the team concept alive in his efforts – who knows… Lofty dreams and ego are not unusual for any young person no matter where you are from.

  3. If he indeed were much “aligned” with his coach and teammates, he would have a much better resume. As it is, he deserves much of the malignment sent his way, especially earlier this year the way he single-handedly brought on our worst ending of a basketball game I can recall Louisville ever having due to our own fault (rather than subsequent official-endused failures). In terms others invented, who will we see this last month of his UofL career? The “Good Edgar” or the “Bad Edgar?”

  4. The light bulb is flickering between on and off for Sosa. If it decides to turn on, we could still see a decent finish for the Cards. He has enough talent to make some good things happen but not he decides he has to score a lot of points in the process.

  5. Just my opinion…but Edgar has about as much chance playing in the NBA as I do replacing Drew Brees as the Sanits QB next year.

That little shake move he used to drive the lane and flip up layups is only margainally successful against Big East opponents. It would be routinely knocked into the fifth row against NBA front lines.

Edgar has a decent outside shot. So do a lot of guys that are working 9-5 jobs after four years of college.
Sosa as a point guard in the NBA is laughable.

His best chance at playing hoops after UofL is either EuroLeague or South America. Or Thursday night at the YMCA in a 25 and younger league.

Not trying to be too critical of him…just stating fact. Why do you think the NBA scouts have about 20 prospects in front of him? He peaked at the end of his freshman year…
