Auburn apparently has a thing for University of Louisville football coaches. Thankfully, it has yet to work out for the Tigers.

Clint Hurtt, who was named as the national recruiter of the year by ESPN, will continue to coach the University of Louisville defensive line and serve as recruiting coordinator for Charlie Strong.

Hurtt, according to reports, was on the Auburn campus this week meeting with Gene Chizik about similar responsibilities with Auburn to replace an assistant who joined the Tennessee Titans NFL franchise.

The talks were private, of course, so we don’t know who turned down whom. But we have a good idea. Mr. Hurtt has a pretty good thing going at U of L.

Coach Strong tweeted this morning, “Big news!!! The big Hurtt is staying with the Cardinals.”

In a Facebook posting, Hurtt said, “I appreciate everything that Coach Chizik showed my wife and I. I owed it to my family to at least look at the opportunity to coach in the SEC. I believe in Charlie Strong and the University of Louisville, and believe we are on our way to great things. Thank you for all the love from our Cardinal faithful. Go Cards!”

Auburn, remember, tried to secretly lure Bobby Petrino away from Louisville a few years ago. A lot of people at Auburn, including the former President of the university, regretted the move.

  1. Extremely good news, possibly the best recruiter in football, prolific in Florida, incredible in Miami. Charlie Strong said in a tweet today that Louisville would not be a training ground for coaches to go elsewhere … or something like that. What an incredible guy he is.
