Sorry, no Big 12 invitation right now. Probably no switch from adidas to Nike. Nor much of a change in the athletic department’s web site either.

Having had a couple of days to reflect on the “Big Change coming to U of L Sports March 1,” we are convinced it relates to a new marketing theme for the University of Louisville.

Since the message on UofLSports.com was quickly pulled after one day, the observer was relying on memory on what the message actually said. Someone at ITV wisely saved a copy of the message. What it said was “The Next Chapter in Cardinal Athletics Coming 3.1.12.”

Below that in red was a mysterious “L1C4.

The marketing campaign, or the next chapter, may have already begun, as early as Monday during the U of L-Syracuse basketball game. The “L1C4” was prominent on lighted advertising boards in front of the scorer’s table and was on some cheerleader garb and fan apparel.

L1C4” is a takeoff on Rick Pitino’s mantra of U of L players putting the team first over other personal or individual goals. It is an abbreviated version of “Louisville First, Cardinals Forever.”

Expect a big marketing campaign and a new wave of merchandising, starting March 1st. That’s my guess and I’m sticking to it.

  1. And I thought it was R2D2 and C3PO’s evil twin. Just goes to show how much Pop culture we have been subjected to.
