Always a good sign when the Superintendent of a University of Louisville construction project is wearing a Cardinal logo on his hard hat.

Doug Walls, who is overseeing the expansion of Jim Patterson Baseball  Stadium, flashes the “L” sign Friday indicating that construction is well under way.

The areas behind the first and third base dugouts are being cleared for the installation of permanent seating, which will boost overall seating capacity to 3,000-plus. He expects the project to be complete in time for the beginning of the 2013 baseball season.

Walls, who is employed by Abel Construction, was in good spirits despite the nasty 100-plus degree temperatures, cordially giving a fellow UofL fan a tour. He’s the father of seven children and six grandchildren and is a longtime fan, as is one of his sons working with him on the project.

They made the observer promise to bring UofL stickers on his next trip to the stadium. “We’ll make sure all the workers are wearing them, no matter who they pull for,” he said. The observer will follow through, count on it.

Old concrete footings are currently being removed from the seating area behind the first base dugout.
