One of the sprigs of the Tom Jurich AD tree has popped up in Lexington.

Dr. Holly Sheilley, a member of the TJ’s staff from 2002 to 2010, has been named Athletic Director at Transylvania University, overseeing 23 sports participating at the NCAA’s Division III level. Holly

Sheilley worked with Jurich at UofL from 2002 to 2010, serving as assistant athletic director for student development, with duties that included bidding and managing Olympic championship events and coordinating the Cardinals’ LCare program.

After leaving UofL, she worked at the NCAA as an assistant director of championships, overseeing nine NCAA championship events in Division I and Division III.

Sheilley had an interesting comment when asked by the Lexington Herald-Leader about the current state of Division I athletics:

“The state of college athletics is very interesting right now, because, especially in D-I like you just mentioned, it has gone to an extreme business model to survive or to keep up with the haves and the have-nots, you know like a Louisville or Kentucky. They’re gonna have to go out and continue to fund raise, raise their ticket prices to keep the money that they need to keep up with the rest of the country, to keep in the conference they’re in. It’s a perpetual ball that’s going downhill faster than I think they’re gonna be able to keep up with, personally. That’s one of the things that I love about Transy is that it is your traditional, it’s the way that college athletics started, the student-athlete model …”

Interesting indeed.
