A strong case for underground utilities can be made for the intersection of Floyd and Central streets where an ugly mess of wires and poles competes with the beauty of the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium expansion.  Departments and academicians within the university are reportedly studying ways to improve energy use. This intersection would be a good starting point. However, the reality is that football coach Charlie Strong would have to get involved to make it happen (as if he doesn’t always have his hands full). (Click on photo to ENLARGE.)

  1. Underground utilities is sorely needed. Kentucky has been hit with too many blackouts. The unemployment rate would be significantly lower if there were qualified people to do the work that such a project would require.

Funding. Congress doesn’t want to fund this project. Republicans don’t want it because they say it will help Democrats re-election bid. Democrats want it because they believe it would help their re-election efforts.

    1. Probably not high on the Congressional agenda but the Democrats are in control of Congress and Mitch McConnell, one of U of L’s most powerful fans, is the No. 1 Republican. Mitch would never stand in the way of something for U of L.

  2. There is a similar confluence of poles and wires at the corner of Floyd and Boxley…right across from the East entry to PJCS and near the Parrish House. Let’s hope if they are going underground…they’ll include this area as well.

  3. well now that LG&E is owned or in the process of being owned by PP&L, i doubt we will see the same local support that an eon allocated. eon (the mostly European owned utility) provided the community with economic support as well as all the power needs, but now that it is owned by PP&L there is a possibility that the finical contributions will have to be approved by Pitt Fans/supporters. lets not forget that 🙂 Gee that rate increase seems like a much better idea now 😉

    1. If the underground utilities are a budget priority as atlcard17 indicates, some relief from the eye sore may well be on the way. Let’s just hope it’s not a “long term” priority.

  4. When they bury the utilities I would request they bury along with them a certain football coach. Don’t think I need to give any clues as to whom I mean.

  5. I’m sure that there is a certain party, intitials T.J., who is already pushing Corporate sponsor LG&E about the cleanup of Floyd Street electrical. He’s the most amazing detail guy I have ever seen and I’d wager a Del Frisco’s steak dinner that it won’t be long before those wires will disappear.

  6. What immediately jumpted out at me in the photo was that massive new banner attached to the new eastside ramp enclosures. That’s awesome! That’s the first I’ve seen/heard about it. I’d like to see it up close.

Last Sunday there were two guys on lifts drilling into the latticework on that side of the ramps. I’ll bet they were putting up the clips for this hummer.

      1. Nice, very nice! Though I know the poster is a tribute to the seniors, I like the unposed look and energy of the guys in this scene!

        Thanks, Charlie

P.S Here’s hoping the dumpster/tool bin gets moved before opening day!
