Someone once told Stephan Van Treese that “hard work beats talent when talent isn’t working hard,” and he has obviously taken that advice to heart, as exhibited in the Louisville basketball team’s 86-77 win over South Florida.

Van Treese also benefits from being one of those good old Hoosier kids who loves playing basketball for the heck of it. Doesn’t hurt, either, that he’s 6-foot-9 and weighs 235 pounds and is deceptively quick, even if out of control much of the time.

  • Plays with no fear. Probably doesn’t know what it is. Just wants to be out there, mixing it up, thriving on the playing time.
  • Take him lightly on out-of-bounds plays, and he’ll shove a monster dunk down your throat.
  • Get careless with the ball, and Van Treese is off to the races.
  • Question Louisville’s board game, and he’ll pull down nine offensive rebounds and five on the defensive end.
  • A dozen points. Bonus points.
  • Almost looking like he belongs out there. Some on the bench taking note, hoping to regain some lost playing time.
  • Hoping Rick Pitino doesn’t forget next game.

Rudy-type guy, doesn’t take mistakes personally, never quits scrapping. Rudy not listed among his favorite movies but every Hoosier has seen it at least a dozen times.

  1. Gorgui Dieng continues to do well he is the post with the mos. He is good at shot blocking too. I realize Van Treese has so much to offer – I think with time he will become a true leader. He just needs to sure up his talent with size and agility. Can you imagine as he improves what a value he will be to the team.. He reminds me of an eager puppy with very big paws he hasn’t grown into yet.(grin)

  2. The guy is big and agile, but incredibly awkward and still makes a difference. We could use a few more like him.

  3. Nothing fancy, he just gets the job done. Now if would improve his free throw shooting, the Big East might not seem so daunting.
