Robert Hughes began a special relationship with the University of Louisville when he enrolled at the UofL Medical School about 33 years ago. The fan base in Western Kentucky has been growing ever since.
Today Dr. Hughes is Chairman of the UofL Board of Trustees He and his wife Joyce operate the Primary Care Medical Center, one of the largest in the Puchase Region, with a staff that includes numerous Louisville grads.
“I have 34 people in my family who have either graduated or are currently attending UofL,” he said. “My wife is a med school grad, as is her brother and brother in law and their spouses.” They have two sons currently enrolled UofL Medical School. Another son will attend the business school next year.
Hughes has been a member of the Board of Trustees for nine years. He’s a native of Prestonsburg and obtained his undergraduate degree from Transylvania University in Lexington before enrolling at UofL. He met his Joyce on the first day at medical school and they were married three years later.
“I’ve see a lot of changes at UofL in 30 years but nothing like all the changes that have occurred in past decade or so,” he said. “It has been amazing to be a part of that growth. The leadership of Jim Ramsey and Tom Jurich has been phenomenal.”
“The ACC perfect in terms of athletics but academics as well,” he continued. “There are some exception academic schools. It’s like playing tennis, competing against someone who’s great always makes you better.”
Keep growing that fan base in Western Kentucky, Dr. Hughes.
