Unfortunately for everyone involved, Syracuse has announced  an “Orange Out” for the Louisville-Syracuse football game Friday.  One would have to be totally immersed in the Syracuse culture to go along with this spectacle. cuse

Not a pretty color, among the least favored by university athletic programs and one that evokes strong sentiments — one either loves orange or hates it.  Some find it to be optimistic and uplifting, rejuvenating their spirits. For many others, however, the color evokes feelings of depression, irritability, cheapness and nausea — perfect for prison uniforms.

One recalls a bus trip to Knoxville for a UofL-Tennessee basketball game several years ago, stopping at one of those modern day country stores for lunch. About halfway through the meal, the place is invaded by a group of Tennessee fans wearing all sorts of orange combinations. One shaking his head over the choice of the clownish effect, and why anyone in their right mind would want to be seen in the color.

Even the Syracuse football team seems to be waffling about all-orange uniforms — yes, orange helmets, orange jerseys, orange socks, orange shoes — for the upcoming game, according to Joe Giansante, the SU sports information director, in a report on Nune’s Magician, a Syracuse blog.

“I don’t have the exact knowledge of…if by game time, if they’ll completely be ready, but I think the three full uniform sets that were bought, were bought and introduced, and the orange [sets] are going to always be a uniform that’s going to be added. Both pants and top. And those things can come in at different times. They could come in together, they’re being shipped from overseas. That’s a longer process in order to purchase and get those in. So, look, if they’re not orange uniforms, [if] they’re not ready for the game, our guys will be wearing as much orange as they possibly can. Orange helmet, orange shoes and socks, and undershirts and recognizing that.”

One has to wonder whether orange jock straps and cups might be part of the equation as well.

A bit much even for a school that calls itself “The Orange?” If they’re lucky, some of the key accessories won’t arrive in time.
