No fund raising campaign necessary for the next big athletic facility for the University of Louisville. In fact, it will be one of the largest holdings in UofL’s athletic real estate portfolio.

An organization affiliated with UofL has reached a deal to acquire the Cardinal Club, a 7,000-yard golf course in Simpsonville, from a group of private investors, according to a source. Current members will be informed officially by letter in the near future.

Discussions had reportedly been occurring for at least a year. The seller is Champion’s Way LLC, a group headed by local businessman Tom Musselman, who played golf for UofL as a student. The group bought the course in fall 2003 from from Orlando, Fla.-based Arnold Palmer Golf Management LLC, according to Business First.

The Cardinal Club was opened in October 2001 by Columbia, S.C.-based University Clubs of America Inc., which operated the golf course under a licensing agreement with UofL.

The move will give the University full control over a quality golf course as it prepares for a major step up competitively in the Atlantic Coast Conference next season. UofL’s men’s and women’s teams have competed there since the club opened.
