Once again the sound system at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium is a problem during Louisville football games.

Apparently there are two settings on the control panel — obnoxiously loud and squeamishly irrelevant. There is nothing in between. Either that, or someone sets the volume and forgets it.

The observer’s seats are on in the second level on the five-yard line on the end adjacent to the Schnellenberger Football Complex — at the same level as the speakers. During the Kentucky game, however, the only thing one could consistently comprehend was Sean Moth’s occasional, “That’s good for another, Cards’ First Down!”

The fans on the new UPS Flight Deck had to be wondering if the stadium even had a  system.

Quite a contrast from last season when the volume was so high one couldn’t even hear what the person next to them was saying.

Here’s an idea for the guy in the sound booth. Have someone get up, walk around and listen. Then go back to the control panel and turn the volume button up or down. It’s not that complicated.

Then submit a requisition to the purchasing office for new speakers to be positioned around the stadium, not just in one end zone. The engineer who said that one location in the end zone was ideal should be re-engineered.

  1. Just wondering if the author has ever run a PA.

I can’t stop laughing at “It’s not that complicated.”

Yes, its an issue. But blaming the audio engineer is not the solution. He has a thankless enough job as it is without taking flak for a design flaw.

    1. Well, as a matter of fact, I have been involved with a few sound systems, and it isn’t that complicated. Shouldn’t be anyway, with almost a dozen years in the stadium.

  2. FWIW…the actual song “In the Air Tonite” sung by Phil Collins deals with his feelings at the time when he was going thru a nasty divorce.

Now that Kragthorpe has been “divorced” from Louisville…maybe we don’t need the song anymore.

Bring back Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. It’s good enough for Virginia Tech.

  3. Zag, was that an intentional misquote? The line is, “I can feel it coming in the air tonight….”

  4. I missed the Miami Vice music. Maybe we wore it out during the first 11 seasons, huh? That was the theme song as far I as I was concerned, and “I can hear it calling in the air tonight.”

  5. Unfortunately next week it will probably be so loud it will make your ears bleed. They need well placed speakers, not more volume.

  6. I agree. The sound level must be increased. I think its at the same level it was last year. The only difference is the 25,000 plus increase in fan attendance for the UK game. Its not hard to hear the PA when there are only 22,000 fans in the stadium which, if I am not mistaken, was about the attendance of last years Homecoming game. The New Ribbon on the other hand was a great addition and I enjoyed the in-game stats which were often showed on it.

  7. There is definitely a problem with the sound system. My seats are near the new terrace, in section 220. We couldn’t hear any announcements; we only knew who the ball carrier was, or who made the tackle, if we could see the number of the player involved. I hope that something is done soon to correct this issue.

  8. We had a hard time hearing Mr. Moth as well in the Crunch Zone. I have no doubt that the sound system was tampered with by John Calipari or his associates..who was in attendance at the game.

  9. Amen! The PA sounds like the speaker is oscillating like the siren on top of Seneca High School….
