Shelby-HarperShelby Harper is a magnet for autograph seekers.

Sad night.

University of Louisville women’s basketball fans officially said goodbye to Shelby Harper before Wednesday’s game against Seton Hall, signaling the approaching end of her college career. She was the starting guard on Senior Night, standing in for Shoni Schimmel.

The tiny 5-foot-4 blonde from Scottsville arrived at UofL in 2009, winning a spot as a walk on. Nobody really expected her to see much action, probably not even her coach Jeff Walz. But over the next four seasons, she would play in 114 games.

Shelby has been a crowd favorite since her freshman year, another of those injury-plagued seasons for Coach Jeff Walz. At one point, the Lady Cards were down to seven players. She would start in 17 games, achieving a career game highs of 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in different games.

When his team needed energy and enthusiasm, Shelby never disappointed her coach or her fans.

She will  be back to the KFC Yum! Center for at least one more game, the start of the NCAA women’s tournament March 24th.

  1. As a five-year WBB season ticketholder I have enjoyed watching Shelby give everything she has every time she sees action.

  2. Coach Walz paid the ultimate compliment to the “blonde blur” when he told her parents that he’d be quite happy if his daughters grew up to be like Shelby.

Gonna miss that pesky Yorkie running up and down the court harassing opposing guards…

  3. Kent Spencer (or his colleague) last night on telecast referred to Shelby as a “pest.” Right on, but in a very positive way. In pregame video, Shelby can be heard saying, “It’s not how big you are but how big you play.” Exactly. Go Cards!
