Somebody forgot to tell Rutgers that its basketball team is not meant to be taken seriously.

Gregory Echenique, one of the nation’s top prep centers, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Scarlet Knights.

A 6-9, 263-pounder, Echenique averaged more than 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks last season for St. Benedict’s, which was ranked No. 2 in the USA Today Super 25’s final national rankings.

The Big East school also said forward Jonathan Mitchell, who was named Mr. New York Basketball 2006, will transfer to Rutgers from the University of Florida.
