Just what the doctor ordered for Louisville football. Eastern Kentucky University comes to Cardinal Stadium, Saturday at 7 p.m. In front of real fans, not Covid empty seats.

Eastern (1-0) comes into the game after opening with a 31-28 win over Western Carolina. It was the Colonels first win as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. This is not the same EKU team that rolled into old Cardinal Stadium in 1985 and put a 45-21 thumping on Coach Howard Schellenberger.

Louisville last played the Colonels in 2019, winning handily 42-0 under Coach Scott Satterfield.

The Eastern Kentucky running game features T. J. Jones who carried 17 times for 115 yards as the Colonels rolled up 226 yards rushing. Quarterback Parker McKinney had a good game passing for 238 yards and one touchdown and an interception. McKinney’s favorite target was Mo Edwards who caught six passes for 103 yards.

Running back Da’Joun Hewitt was named Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Purdue transfer carried the ball 22 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Patrick Nations, who kicked three extra points and a 21-yard field goal, was Special Teams Player of the Week. The defense was led by Matthew Jackson’s 11 tackles. Safeties Roy Baker and Jaden Woods each had interceptions.

The Colonels are coached by Walt Wells in his second season, posting a 3-6 won-lost record in 2020.
