An on-the-scene report from our correspondent in Charlotte, following the Louisville football scene:

The music was rocking and the fans were hopping at the UofL Fan Appreciation Party Monday night in Charlotte for the Belk Bowl. Thousands of Cardinal fans flocked to the roof of the Epicenter entertainment complex to dine on free food and beverages at the affair.

Several Cardinal notables were in attendance, including Denny Crum. president James Ramsey, the LadyBirds dance team and Louie the Cardinal Bird.

The event was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m…but hours before that, a sea of Cardinal Red and Black had jammed the downtown facility. Seats were next to impossible to find, but with the music and party atmosphere, few wanted to leave their feet.

We ran into Valerie Owens Combs, dressed in her red and black, and smiling broadly. “This is for the fans and it looks like they’re enjoying it.” she commented as throngs of people participated the the C-A-R-D-S cheer and embraced each other.

Things were still ramped up as this guy headed back to the light rail system around 10:30 to catch a few hours of sleep. It’s raining this morning in Charlotte.

  1. It was rocking at the fan appreciation party til about midnight. The Band was outstanding and the food was delicious. One of the best fan appreciation parties I can remember.

  2. Paul/Charlie/Fans –
Thanks to all who are in Charlotte “representin'” The Ville. As always, be classy fans and make us all proud, win or lose.

It’s tearing me up not to be there. Going back to the ’93 Libery Bowl, I’ve only missed the Humanitarian “Blue” Bowl and the second GMAC Bowl. 96-year-old mom’s health took a recent turn for the worse and all siblings were on deck. But, she’s battling back now and seems good for several more rounds. She even regularly caught the basketball Cards from her hospital/rehab rooms (now you know where my FANaticism comes from).

We’re hoping a Belk Bowl victory might be just the final push mom needs to get her out the rehab door by the end of this week and on to a new compassionate living venue. But, again, victory or not, we’re proud of our players, coach, university, city, fans and Observors! Either way, it WILL be a Happy New Year!

    God bless you all.
