Lo and behold.

The University of Louisville soccer team is ranked No. 1 among collegiate soccer teams, according to this week’s rankings over at Top Drawer Soccer.

The site projects the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers on an ongoing basis, including every automatic conference berth.

Ken Lolla’s team is 7-0-2 through its first nine matches, with wins over North Carolina State, Fordham, Appalachia State, Missouri State, Kentucky, Providence and St. John’s. The two ties were 0-0 affairs with 11th-ranked Ohio State and 17th-ranked Duke.

Louisville, which was ranked fifth last week, leaped past Akron, where Lolla coached the 13 seasons, after the Zips tied Ohio State 2-2. Akron is 7-0-2 as well.

UConn, not on U of L’s schedule this season, is in third place with an 8-0-2 record.

U of L plays at Rutgers Saturday and at Cincinnati next Wednesday before returning home to meet Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 15th.

The Irish eliminated Louisville from the NCAA tournament last season.

  1. Louisville is on soccer’s big stage now, just where I expected it to be when Ken Lolla was hired. He knows exactly what he is doing and his goal is an NCAA championship.

  2. I’m on the bandwagon already, another great hire by Tom Jurich. Too bad the next home game is two weeks away. Ready for some soccer, baby.
