A significant variation in the chronology of Angel Nunez, the 6-foot-8 New Yorker who made a verbal commitment Thursday to play basketball at the University of Louisville.

Instead of spending his summer on the AAU circuit, Nunez reportedly hit the books, taking courses in math and English to ensure he will be qualified to play.

That should be welcome news to fans familiar with some of U of L’s recent academic casualties.

UConn’s Jim Calhoun offered Nunez a scholarship this summer, believing the player could be something special. Other suitors included Arizona, Florida, West Virginia, Rutgers and Miami.

He joins a class that is currently ranked No. 7 overall, and features Chane Behanan, Wayne Blackshear, Zach Price and Ryan Taylor.
