Couldn’t resist tuning into the West Virginia-Texas football game Saturday, thinking that that could have been the University of Louisville on the big stage in Austin. Texas. UofL fans are still hurting from the lack of an invitation to the Big 12 Conference.

The emotion attached to watching the game reminded one of a kid during his teenage years one night in a movie theater. The girl he worshipped was there on a date with the neighborhood tough guy, an individual the kid tolerated only because he was so much bigger.

The kid made every effort to stay interested in the movie. Try as he would, however, it was impossible not to be distracted by the scene a seven rows to the front and six seats to the right against the wall, this character and the kid’s dream girl wrapped together from the opening scene. No ride home, no escape, forced to endure. Long, slow, agonizing, burning humiliation.

Their relationship wouldn’t last long, the principles not having much in common. The bully would pursue other conquests, the girl could continue to be nice to the kid. Friendly and teasing but never encouraging. Forced to accept who he was in her eyes, the kid would move along, too, fortunately discovering that life would provide many other opportunities. Thankful today for a decades-long commitment from another young lady.

Yes, it hurts that West Virginia is in the Big 12 Conference and that Louisville remains in the Big East. But if there’s anything that the conference reshuffling and turbulence over the years has taught us, it is that the landscape will continue to change and there will be other opportunities. That’s what we kept telling ourselves anyway as we endured the Texas-West Virginia broadcast.

  1. We will be in the Big 12 in 2 years and you will have nothing but a loss still too UL. Read your news at No hair Dana!! Maybe he will have a couch for you too burn!

  2. Dutchman is awfully angry after a big win. His team is in the Big Almost 12 and he still hasn the inferiority complex common in hillbillies. Barnyard animals aren’t safe around his trailer.

  3. dutchman, you lost to Louisville at home last year. Facts are facts So go plug youe dike!

  4. Rutgers continues to look strong in the BIG EAST with a 5-0 record, the demise of USF (losing to Temple) and Pittsburgh’s on again-off again season is puzzling, though.

Let’s hope the Panthers are off again Saturday.

As far as WVU goes, they’ve dodged a bullet by not having to play Louisville this year. After all, the Cards did defeat them last season in Morgantown.

  5. Gosh, such drama! WVU a “thug” and “Bully” because they’re in the Big XII and UL is not?? Get over it! Face facts. WVU is a better football program than UL. UL wasn’t even part of the Big Least in the days of Miami and Virginia Tech. UL is a Conf. USA team. UL won’t even win the Big East this year without WVU in it! Cincy or lowly Rutgers will take it from you! How on earth do you think UL would have fared against Texas?? Face facts. UL would have been blown away by the Longhorns. Stop your whining. WVU is a top 5 team and may even contend for the national championship with a Heisman trophy frontrunner Geno Smith at the helm.

    1. Relax Dutch. You take this stuff much too personally, and it’s a stretch for anyone to conclude the writer was calling WVU a thug. You guys really need to have more fun. Isn’t that what it’s all about, being in a great conference, beating Texas and being a top 10 team? Go home and enjoy it while it lasts.
