The time may be coming in the near future when some losing football teams still have opportunities to go bowling … or maybe not.

The NCAA in April approved the addition of the Pinstripe Bowl, raising the total to 35 bowls. The third-ranked Big East team will play the sixth-ranked Big 12 team at the lavish new Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30.

A consideration in approving another bowl may have been that there were only 71 teams with a minimum of six wins for 68 bowl spots last season. Theoretically. the bowls could still be faced with possibility of a shortage of eligible teams this season.

It is becoming more difficult for Football Bowl Subdivision to schedule and get easy wins over lower level Football Championship Subdivision teams. And then there are programs, like USC, that go on probation.

The NCAA has created a committee to develop contingency plans in case the pool comes up short. The study group is chaired by Nick Carparelli, associate commissioner of the Big East Conference. They are taking their sweet time and no decisions have been made yet.

  1. I don’t have time to read the entire blog right now but will sure read it later today….I don’t believe that ANY team who has a losing record in their conference should be invited to a bowl. Too many teams work the system but scheduling enough cupcake wins that (combined with the few they can eke out in their conference) give them enough wins to go to a pathetic bowl. If a team can’t win in their conference, playing their peers, they should not be allowed to go bowling. That’s just my opinion…… go CARDS!
