The novelty hasn’t worn off for some people.

State Senator Tim Shaughnessy has proposed legislation during the opening days of the Kentucky General Assembly that would require the universities of Louisville and Kentucky to play each other in basketball and football annually.

The stipulation is included in Senate Bill 45, which deals primarily with the responsibilities of university governing boards and student progress tracking programs.

Shaughnessy, a Louisville Democrat, says in the bill thousands of Kentuckians benefit from the “camaraderie, good will and sportsmanship the rivalry engenders.”

Obviously a glass half full person who doesn’t visit fan blogs, message boards, sports bars or pay attention to what’s going on around him while attending rivalry games. Some could argue persuasively that the rivalry brings out the worst in the fan bases.

A state law isn’t necessary, and a break in the series now and then wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
