One player Louisville could not do without.

The presence of Johnny Patrick was a welcome sight for University of Louisville fans attending the opening session of fall football practice, removing doubt that the team’s most dynamic defensive players would not be returning this season.

Patrick would be prominent in any highlight reels from last season, with his aggressive approach to the ball. He’s an intimidating presence on defense because of his bone-shaking hits. He makes his man pay a price.

He recently plead guilty in Jefferson District Court to a misdemeanor charge of harassment with physical contact after an incident over a cell phone with a female acquaintance. He was ordered by the judge to enter a diversion program and receive counseling.

No word about how Charlie Strong is dealing with Patrick on the issue. Nor do we want to know. Who wants to be trouble with Charlie Strong?

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior is one of few players to not miss any action the past two seasons, having started in 26 consecutive games. In 12 games last season, he was credited with 53 tackles, fifth best on the team. One of his best efforts came against Kentucky when he had nine tackles, including seven solo, and a pass interception.

Keep it on the field, J.P.
