Two recent favorites of University of Louisville basketball fans will be playing in the KFC Yum! Center if ticket sales are brisk enough for a game between the Dominican Republic national team and an outfit that calls itself the Kentucky Legends.

The Legends, of course, were assembled by John Calipari who, in still another effort to one-up Rick Pitino and U of L fans, wants to have something resembling a home game atmosphere on the Cards’ home court. The game is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 16th.

But Calipari is not content with that, suggesting that Denny Crum, U of L’s former Hall of Fame coach, may be asked to coach the UK Legends and against a national team that includes two former Louisville players in Francisco Garcia and Edgar Sosa. Crum is said to be receptive to the offer.

We’re happy to welcome Garcia and Sosa back. However, the notion of a bunch of “UK legends” playing an exhibition game at the Yum! Center is more than a little grating. The contract with the Yum! Center forbids UK from playing a regular season game there without U of L’s approval. A clear case of Calipari again circumventing the rules to get what he wants.

Denny Crum agreeing to coach a team of former UK players is reminiscent of Rick Pitino’s decision to become head coach at U of L. Maybe Denny’s been away from the game so long he misses the spotlight. Maybe he no longer cares what fans think. More than once during his career he suggested than fans should mind their own business. Or maybe he thinks it’s just an exhibition game and nobody really cares.

Whatever. Denny is playing right into the hands of Calipari’s, sticking it to Rick Pitino and Louisville fans every chance he gets.

  1. Hmmm, ricky won that ring with Kentucky so bragging about that is really silly. Cal has always has 5 star players, really? Try a history lesson and you will find that before Kentucky, he’s had a few and made it to the final four twice with only that few. Roy Williams, before being at unc, never won the big one either so change can bring more success. Last concerning Denny, he is cardinal basketball, but very few of you fans act like it. He has a reason to feel slighted, and you guys don’t need to cry over a basketball game. It will be fun.

  2. At least Cards fans can go watch some of your “legends” at East Bullitt high school.

Or… go to Yum and watch Garcia and Sosa play for Cal.

eh…. maybe watch your legendary 2 time NCAA champion coach Crum lead the UK legends team.

    Hmmm….

I’d be upset too. Just reinforces the “L” as a lesser program to UK. I understand the angst.

  3. I can understand the irritation, but why accuse Calipari of circumventing rules that forbid a regular season game to be played at Yum without UL’s approval. This isn’t a regular season game. Perhaps if UL wanted to keep UK out, they shouldn’t have put the limiting clause in the contract.

  4. Cal has coach for 20yrs with a ridiculous amount of top tier 5star players with no ring..great recruiter, just decent coach..he should be jealous

  5. i think that denny crum would never go against his fan base and coach uk legends. thats ridicoulous. and btw yes calipari can recruit well but i dont see him having a ring on his finger like pitino. he might just be a little jealous of the original italian kentucky coach.

  6. Much ado about nothing. The tickets will go wanting and the game will be cancelled. The one and done blue legends can go back to doing whatever they do since they dropped out of school.

  7. Looks like there’s a whole lotta butt-hurt up in here. Get over it for cripes sake.

  8. Don’t get mad, Card fans. Be clever…and get even! Think up the next great taunt to Big Brother…like the billboard facing westbound I-64 traffic just west of the KY River by Frankfort that classicly says, “Louisville is miles ahead of you.”

How about another billboard on the Jefferson County/Louisville Metro/Shelby County line facing eastbound I-64 that reads, “Leaving The Ville. It’s all downhill from here!”?

Since downhill is greater than a one-syllable word, you may have to also post the footnote, “‘Downhill’ adv 1: toward the bottom of a hill 2: toward a lower or inferior state or level”

    1. “Leaving” is also a two syllable word.

Footnote: Syllable is a unit of speech. If the word contains more than one unit of speech, then the word is greater than one-syllable.

Why would you define “downhill” because it’s greater than one-syllable but not define “leaving,” which is also greater than one-syllable?

Apparently, you failed to recognize the irony. You exposed your own fallacy in an attempt to disparage a group of people.

Info for the blogger: this is not a UK sanctioned game nor is the UK team participating. The only connection is Coach Cal. Thus, UofL’s permission is not needed. Moreover, the arena was financed, in part, with taxpayers’ money. The Yum Center’s board of directors can choose how they use the facility.

  9. You really think he couldn’t care less about UofL? You’re really showing your ignorance here. I’m sure as a blue fan you probably don’t remember instances like when Cal was coaching and losing to Pitino before he came to lexington, probably because you all thought he was a dirty slimeball like the rest of us still do.

  10. Seriously Writer, get a freaking life. Calipari could CARE LESS about UL. I think its funny how UL fans think Caliparis every move is just so put UL down. He could CARE LESS. We play ONE TIME a year. Get a life, no wonder your tagged as “little brother” because your always kicking and screaming about UK.

  11. Another example of Crum showing disrespect to Pitino. Countless times on his radio shows he has shown bias to Calipari and maybe he should remember that he still works for the University of Louisville.

    1. Actually, just to help you Cardinal idiots out. Crum HATES Jurich… Jurich gave him the boot, so i’m guessing Crum would LOVE to coach that game. Plus, if it was “Your” arena, this game wouldn’t happen, this is CALIPARI and KENTUCKY’S state! ALL of it.

      1. You can have the state, but we own the most important part of this state. Next time spare me and clean up the language yourself. It doesn’t reflect well on your fan base.

    1. Brandon, did you think that one up all by yourself? School starts back in two weeks. Perhaps your teacher will show you how to write a sentence without the grammatical errors
