Rick Pitino is attempting to throw cold water on speculation that Derrick Caracter would return to the University of Louisville basketball team next season, saying it’s in the best interest of all parties for Caracter to pursue other interests.

If this is Pitino’s final decision, it had to be a very difficult one because Pitino wants so much for Caracter to succeed. It has to be heartbreaking to finally send DC packing.

Caracter, on the other hand, has a tough time believing that he has run out of chances with Pitino, having been given so many other second chances over the past two years. He has been sending text messages to the coach’s cell phone every day or so.

Based on Caracter’s history, if Pitino did give in and allow Caracter back, it would be only a matter of time before everyone would be disappointed again.

Fans are at disadvantage in this situation, not knowing all the facts, not knowing how times Caracter has thumbed his nose at the rules, his coach and his teammates. It’s not surprising that out of 59 people voting in our Card Game fan poll, 69.6% indicated that they want Pitino to let Caracter return, 23.2% don’t want him back, and 7.1% have checked the maybe button.

Pitino is closest to the situation and obviously has the last word. But you just never know with Pitino. This may be his way of making Caracter finally face reality. If so, Caracter had better be very persuasive in convincing the coach that he has a new attitude.

  1. Remember the ABA?

Yes, Charlie, in this off-season lull, we’re going back.

To a time when pro basketball was at its wildest and craziest–and most fun.

To a time when we indeed ruled the pro basketball world….

Maybe you and your readers would like to take a brief stroll into history.
