Fairgrounds StadiumWith thousands of UofL fans stomping their feet up and down at crucial times, the clacking and clunking would raise decibel levels to extreme levels during some games.

There was no better prelude to a C-A-R-D-S cheer than that rhythmic thumping. At other times, when the stompers really got going, the sound resembled the sound of a jumbo jet taking off.

Say goodbye for a final time to the aluminum bleachers at the old Fairgrounds Stadium, along with all those garish signs promoting music concerts during the state fair. Demolition will begin on Monday, relegating the bleachers to Cardinal folklore.

The aluminum bleachers were added during the early Seventies, raising capacity from 21,000 to more than 36,000 for University of Louisville football games.

The demolition only includes the bleachers for now. The Fair Board needs to request $3 million from the Kentucky General Assembly to complete the project, possibly replacing the old structure with an amphitheatre for concerts.

Those were some good times.

  1. I knew a guy that actually broke his foot stomping on those bleachers. Had to call EMS and missed the rest of the game.
