Maybe ESPN could just take over football scheduling for the Big East. Would greatly simplify the process.

On the same day ESPN paid Georgia to opt out of a football game with the University of Louisville next season, it was announced that North Carolina has replaced Georgia as the opening game opponent next season.

Has a football game ever been scheduled so quickly?

Troubling that ESPN has so much influence in college sports. The network could be making a mistake because the Louisville/Charlie Strong comeback story may be the biggest story of the 2011 season.

Any bets on a noon time kickoff?

  1. Um…ABC is owned by the same company as ESPN. NBC has gotten on it’s knees for Notre Dumb. CBS does the goose step with the $EC, but does have another partnership with EasSPN. The Big East needs to jerk a knot in the ass of ESPN.

  2. It kinda makes your head spin. It sure shows the weakening of the Big 3 (CBS, NBC, ABC). ESPN seems to be able to dictate game times and opponents simply because they have the means (and contracts) to broadcast games for most of the NCAA conferences.

The fact that the Big East was started at the same time that ESPN was is not mere coincidence. That they were in lockstep for years shows the power of ESPN in its early stages. That is what drove both to the national prominence.

Unless the Big 3 put more money and resources into minor college sports coverage, ESPN will eat their lunch.

Forgot to throw in Fox Sports. They are the up-and-coming ESPN. And you can tell ESPN hates it. BUt even they still don’t cover women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, etc. And they don’t have a 24/7 sports channel.

Time will tell if Fox and ESPN control all or the Big 3 fight back. In either case, we the fans get MORE and better sports coverage. I LOVE competition.

  3. Not sure why anyone would watch Georgia-Boise State over UofL-Georgia? Sounds like a lot of Lee Corso’s running around that place. Weird.
