In a post yesterday I stated that Drew Deener, Louisville’s play-by-play TV announcer, made the comment that Coach Charlie Strong most likely wouldn’t be able to get big time recruits at Louisville like the players he had at Florida. Furthermore, I berated Deener for saying that Strong would likely get athletes more along the lines of the ones playing at schools like Southern Mississippi.

Deener e-mailed me the actual audio and was a stand up guy speaking with me on the phone earlier today. And I appreciate that.

First, the reference to was that when addressing recruits who are of lower status than those of the Florida caliber, Strong might say “are you sure you want to go to Southern Miss?”, or a school like that. The audio replay made it clear that Deener was not saying the only recruits we were likely to get were of that level.

Second, I said that Deener’s implication was that U of L will never be able to get four-star and four-star recruits. Drew said he was only referring to the fact that it wasn’t likely that would happen this year.

Drew, hear me loud and clear. I am sorry if I misunderstood and misrepresented what you said.

I further erred by saying Deener was raised in the hills of Kentucky with the insinuation that he is a closet Wildcat fan. In fact, Deener, a St. X. grad, was raised in the Highlands in Louisville. I owe Deener an apology on that one also. His personal fandom naturally will remain something for Red and Blue fans to fight about ad infinitum.

So what was up with yesterday’s blog? Perhaps the last three years were harder on a lot of us than we thought, causing some of us to be a wee bit touchy when we think someone is “dissing” our Cards’ football program. And Deener was an easy target so, he caught some of that frustration. Still no excuse. In any event, I promise never to write a blog based on hearsay or second hand information.

Drew reiterated that he’s one hundred percent behind Charlie Strong and frankly a little mystified that I didn’t hear that in his remarks. The reason I didn’t HEAR it was because I only got the information SECOND HAND…not good. Hope this Mea Culpa is accepted.

But, not so fast my friend. Hold on. We gotta make a little deal here. Don’t any of you get any bright ideas about shooting your mouth off to Santa regarding any of this! Let’s just keep this among a few hundred of us. You see, there are still a few things on my list that this bad little boy really wants.

Go Cards!

  1. Sure makes me feel dumb for firing off two emails the GM at WHAS11. Guess I have to be more careful of my sources.

    1. Oh go ahead and reach in the mailbox and try to pull those letters out, CB. And if you get caught (Federal Offense)and have to go to jail, I won’t tell the fat guy in the red suit.

  2. Well I am glad he didn’t blatantly dis the cards. However, he is still a UK fan and he is still horrible, and I will still listen to the radio instead. I am kind of surprised they sent in the forces to correct a blog entry though.

  3. LOL. The ol’ Smokin’ Fastball is low and away on a delivery.

Way to man up on the apology. And, if you’re going to try and bust someone up on line…be prepared for the counter punches.

  4. How much will give me not to tell Santa on you, Tom? Nice response, and don’t worry: It will be our little secret.
