Former teammates of Daniel Covington, a linebacker on last season’s University of Louisville football team, are confirming that he died in a shooting incident early Thursday morning. Another person, considered a person of interest by police, was also wounded.

Total idiocy, a culture in which kids and young men feel packing guns is necessary.

  1. One other thing, I also feel for Isaiah Howes. I can’t imagine what he’s going through either. This whole deal is sad.

  2. I’m assuming that Covington wasn’t on his way to or coming home from work. The nightlife down where the shooting occured doesn’t exactly attract nuns and born again Christians. I fear there is much more to this story that will come out.

And that’s a shame. Covington was a hard working, dedicated football player who basically walked on the team and earned a scholarship from Kragthorpe and gave the Cards significant minutes. He got his degree. We’ll never know now what impact he might have had on a particular industry, business or work site.

RIP, Daniel. Another sad story. A story being played out way too often anymore. I greive…along with your parents, friends and fans.

    1. It has been confirmed that the shooter was former Cardinal baseball player Isaiah Howes. Ugh. This one is going to get real messy.

      1. Wednesday night on Twitter, Daniel posted that someone called the police on him while he was at his job. He said he was going to Wick’s and Prime for a drink. That was last thing he posted there. I’ve read his past postings there and I got the feeling someone may have been harassing him at his job. Maybe this is all just coincidence. I don’t know. I just wish he could have controlled himself if what has alleged to have gone on actually happened. I may not personally know him but it still hurts. I can’t imagine what his friends and family are going through.

  3. Tragic, really tragic. Until some people start exerting leadership in their communities, this is going to keep happening.

  4. Shooting someone 7 times doesn’t sound like self defense. Prayers going out to his family. What a tragedy.

    1. According to police there were only 2 shots. There’s different stories going around. Regardless, a young man’s life was taken and whatever the outcome is, I feel for Daniel’s family and friends. He got his degree and was trying to make a life for himself after football.

RIP Daniel Covington. Cardinal Nation mourns your loss.

      1. Thanks CardRon, I stand corrected. Apparently Covington did instigate this. Who knows what events led up to the confrontation, but either way cooler heads should have prevailed.

  5. It’s being reported that it may be a self-defense shooting. I wasn’t there but something in that doesn’t feel right. Some former players where tweeting something different.
