Believe it or not, the rest of the Cardinal athletic program has continued to advance while the basketball teams were pursuing their Final Four dreams:

Dan McDonnell’s baseball team is 14-9 and the Cards have entered the more interesting part of their schedule. After a game at Western Kentucky Tuesday, U of L hosts Purdue Wednesday at 6 at Jim Patterson Stadium, followed by games against St. John’s Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). On Monday, the Cards travel to Lexington for a 6 p.m. game against Kentucky, ranked No. 8 nationally with a 22-4 record.

The Cards are powered by Justin McClanahan, hitting .424, Chris Dominguez, .370, and Jeff Arnold, .344. Dominguez has seven home runs, Dominguez five. Pitchers Justin Marks and Zach Pitts are 2-0 and 4-2, respectively.

Five games have canceled or postponed because of inclement weather.

Women’s Softball Team picked up its second over Kentucky this past week, has won all four 1915443.jpegof its Big East games, and has an 18-12 record. Freshman shortstop Colby Wherry (right) was named Big East Hitter of the Week, helped the Cards win all five games last week. She registered a .563 (9 for 16) batting average with four doubles and seven RBI. She also had a team-leading .813 slugging percentage and .611 on-base percentage.

Women’s Lacrosse lost its first home game ever in bowing to No. 8 Georgetown 13-5 on Sunday. They are 7-3 in their first season under Kelli Young. Next game is against Loyola (Md.) Sunday at 1 p.m. at U of L.
