Funny, a local sports columnist suggesting that the Big East Conference forego its automatic invitation to a BCS football bowl this season. He just couldn’t resist jumping on the anti-Big East bandwagon.

When similar sentiments are expressed about the Atlantic Coast Conference, he may be taken seriously. That’s never going to happen because his publication has too few readers outside the state to offend.

Assessing the strengths of the major conferences is a subjective exercise in which self-anointed experts like to engage. It’s entertaining but it’s more often based on biases and stereotypes than any evidence. Their opinions rarely change in spite of what’s happening on the field.

When the league finally does have a down year, the analysts can say they were right. Smart guys, those experts.

These were same people bashing the Big East when the University of Louisville and West Virginia were both in the top 10 four years ago. They will still have the same opinions when another Big East team wins another BCS bowl this season.

  1. I agree. From both the column and Bozich’s blog, I got the sense all he was trying to do was rile up people so “a conversation” could take place. That’s all fine I guess, but I thought the article was poorly written and argued. It’s a privilege to write that CJ column, and more thoughtfulness and insight should have been put in –especially if you’re intentionally trying to be provocative.

  2. After reading the CJ article this morning I couldn’t believe that Rick Bozich would take the low road. While the BCS may be a farce, advocating expanding the farce in this way is an offense to more than just the local readers.

I understand that getting irate feedback from readers is a mark of success for a sports columnist, but insulting an entire conference and the local team at the same time smells of bias and conceit. And Big East bias is well known amongst football pundits. I think due to its origins as a basketball conference.

It’s obvious that Bozich and the CJ have written off and decided that the fan base is not important.
