A salute to Cool Hand Luke

A sharply dressed Denny Crum look, with a rolled up program, of course, was selected for the mural of the University of Louisville’s Hall of Fame coach, hoisted into place a couple of days ago on the west exterior of the Marriott Courtyard across Main Street from the KFC Yum! Center.

His legacy at U of L includes two national championships. six final fours, 23 NCAA appearances, and a tournament record of 43 wins and 23 losses. During 30 seasons he amassed a 675-295 won-lost record.

The official ceremony for the mural is Sunday at Noon.

Other hometown heroes with murals include:  Darrell Griffith, Diane Sawyer, Phil Simms, Allan Houston, Sue Grafton, Louis Brandeis, Lance Burton, Tori Murden, Bud Hillerich, Paul Hornung and Derek Anderson.

Howard Schnellenberger will be along soon. Surely.

What a fine tribute, made even finer yesterday by a very affectionate crowd gathered around this true icon of local sports. Very deserving for a man who has given so generously of himself. Thank you for this opportunity to give back to him. A playing court named for him is well and good, but visitors to our city see the residents’ veneration for him with this mural, visible all year long. Go Cards!
