The University of Louisville women’s basketball team begins the season in front of  22,000 fans against a loaded Tennessee team. Awesome challenge.

UT is fourth in the nation in most pre-season polls, with a roster that could be divided down the middle and still field two better than average teams in the SEC.

A look at the roster reveals 11 players that could go to any other school in the nation except maybe Connecticut and start immediately. Shekinna Stricklen and Angie Bjorklund were selected to the SEC Coaches’ pre-season first team. Glory Johnson and Kelley Cain to the second team.

As far as who Jeff Walz will open with is anybody’s guess. UT loves to run, so a fast lineup might be the ticket. You’ll need a couple of rebounders and shooters in there as well. We’ll venture a guess and say Monique Reid, Asia Taylor, Keisha Hines, Shoni Schimmel, and Tia Gibbs.

Not an easy beginning to the UofL women’s basketball era in the KFC YUM Arena. A good showing, heck, shoot for the stars and say a win could propel the Lady Cards off to an amazing season. For the glass half empty crowd, an obliteration by the Vols could send the Cards off scratching their heads two days later to a tough test at Ohio University.

There is no joy in losing but a strong performance by UofL, regardless of the final numbers on the scoreboard…is needed.
