  1. I spent the day in reflection of my late father. He was in WWII and the Korean War. Sailed on the USS Idaho. Saw kamikaze pilots dive mere yards from his ship. Was at Iwo Jima and Midway. Rest easy, pops.

  2. I was fortunate to do as you suggested bright and early this morning. While working as a volunteer at St. John Center, a guest (homeless man) mentioned he was going to have a nice Veterans’ Day lunch. Uncharacteristicly for most of the guys, he seemed to make his statement with pride and contentment. I asked if he was a Vet. He said he was, “Vietnam.” What could I say but, “Thank you for your service!” He replied, Thank you,” smiled and went on.

For two years of college, I had a student deferment. After that, good fortune gave me a high draft number (267). He had no such luck. I got my degree and entered my profession. He served in Vietnam and now walks the streets. There, but for the grace of God….
