Steve Springer, a University of Louisville basketball (and football, baseball, etc.) fan, accepts the keys during halftime ceremonies at Madison Square Garden to a brand new Volvo S60 for winning Volvo’s Biggest Fan of the Big East contest. A perfect night for Steve except for UofL’s heartbreaking loss to UConn in the championship game of the Big East Championship tournament.
Steve, who lives in Murray, also discusses the family’s challenges in caring for their daughter Mackenzie who was stricken with Transverse Myelitis during the past year. He has received strong support from his wife Casey during an extremely challenging period for the entire family.
Thanks again to everyone who supported the family the past year and for all the fans who got behind Steve in the contest — through the fan poll, his blog comments, Twitter retweets, Facebook comments and YouTube comments during the six-month duration of the competition.
Tom, Steve is catching up on his sleep and trying to overcome exhaustion from the late night games and the hustle and bustle during the trip. Getting back to the hotel around 1 p.m., getting everybody to bed, finally turning off the brain with everything that was happening, and having to get up early in the mornings caught up with him today. American Express also messed up their flight reservations coming home and they almost got separated. Hopefully, he’ll get back to normal with a few hours of rest tonight. As for your question, I’m pretty sure we know what color he will wind up with.
Congratulations, Steve! What a great moment on the big stage! I especially loved the little hop of glee when you thought they were gonna’ give you the keys and, perhaps, escort you out front to hop in your new ride.

Paul, those were the ceremonial keys. He doesn’t have the car yet. Arrangements will be forthcoming in a few days. I think Steve is going home to Murray to get some sleep because he didn’t get much in New York.
