Van Treese leaving Louisville basketball

Stephan Van Treese is moving on, taking his act elsewhere.

The scrappy Hoosier has asked for his release and will transfer from the University of Louisville prior to the 2012-13 college basketball season.

Van Treese had no fear around the basket, banging with the best of them, sacrificing his body on his regular basis, and was well liked by fans and teammates. Unfortunately, he was never going to be a good shooter and be able to hit free throws. And there were the nagging injuries.

A player whose physical skills never seemed to catch up with with his 6-foot-8 frame, Van Treese sought to offset his deficiencies with an abundance of toughness and desire. Unfortunately, that only goes so far as more skilled players become available.

Another fan base will be fortunate to have him.

  1. I guess we saw this coming, with the news that we had room for multiple new players, SVT and Buckles were surely both on their way elsewhere. (Time will tell if I am right about Buckles too.

From all that I’ve seen, he’s been the sort of person we want representing U of L, and we thank him for what he gave while here. I hope he finds a new school that likes him as much as we did, and I especially hope that heals well and soon and enjoys an outstanding remainder of his eligible playing time.

  2. Well put, Rick. He was a fun guy to watch, seemingly playing on pure desire and using his body unselfishly, out of control much of the time. Players with his positive attitude contribute much to team chemistry.
