Floyd Street, which passes through the heart of the University of Louisville, is a mess right now, with construction crews working in and around massive holes in the roadway, along with lots of barriers for students and motorists.
The intersection of Floyd and Warnock, which has always been devoid of curb appeal, is especially busy, with dozens of safety cones, mounds of mud and construction equipment. For decades, the intersection has been an eyesore, an area crammed with a hodge podge of maintenance facilities.
All of that is about to change with the implementation of a $22 million safety and aesthetics upgrade, $18 million of which is being funded by the state road fund. An additional $4 million was provided by the University of Louisville Foundation.
A grand new entrance to the University is being constructed at Floyd and Warnock, which will resemble the northern entrance on Cardinal Avenue that was completed two years ago. It will include medians, bike lanes, ornamental walls, and a large Cardinal logo in the center of the intersection, as well as a new Visitor’s Center on the Southeast corner.
The southeast corner of the intersection will include a brand new Visitor’s Center, a place for interested parties, especially prospective students, to learn more about the University. All of the construction is expected to completed late this summer.
Farther north on Floyd Street, an attractive new roundabout is being constructed at the intersection of Cardinal Boulevard. Underground utilities will support new lighting at the roundabout down Floyd Street past Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
These efforts will greatly enhance one of the main campus thoroughfares, making Floyd Street much more inviting and complementing all of the other beautification projects that have occurred around the University during the past decade.
Much has been accomplished through the university’s beautification efforts and there’s much more to come. UofL is leaving no stone unturned.
