Running for the Roses

For a couple of days each year, everybody becomes interested in horse racing again. Pickers use names, colors, jockeys, post positions, breeding and lineage, past performances and blind draws to make their choices. Doesn’t matter, no system is better than another.

The Kentucky Derby is Louisville’s event, it is everybody’s race. The one time of year when Louisvillians and Kentuckians can without question agree on something. Here is the song that brings it all together best:

  1. Dan Fogelberg passed away this year, a great musician, poet and songwriter. I normally tear up whenever I hear “Run for the Roses”…this year, it’ll probably be a 2 tissue weeping affair. I was fortunate enough to see Dan in concert several times…and don’t forget he also wrote the classic “There’s A Place In The World For A Gambler.”  An incredible talent taken way too early from us.
