Louisville Advances To Big East Semi-Final

The fun part about this University of Louisville baseball team is that one never knows who will come through next.

This time it was Stewart Ijames with a two-run home run over the left field fence in the 11th inning, giving the University of Louisville baseball team new life and a 9-7 win over South Florida. The blast came against South Florida stopper Kevin Quackenbush who had allowed only one hit in six previous innings.

“We don’t have them all clicking right now but we have enough to get it done,” said Dan McDonnell. “I felt real good with Stewart walking to the plate.”

Ijames, a lefthanded batter, said he had had problems hitting to the opposite field this season. The wind was blowing out to the left field fence and Stewart gave it a ride, driving in two runs.

“In extra innings, you’re not trying to hit a home run,” he said. “You’re just trying to keep the ball in play. To hit one to the opposite field tonight was special.”

Phil Wunderlich  is making waves again, collecting four hits, including a home run.

Louisville Reigns In The Rain, Again

One of the earmarks of this college baseball season is that it has coincided with one of the wettest springs in recent memory, raining almost every weekend, home and away, over the last month or so.

However, Dan McDonnell’s has not had a game canceled because of bad weather. He has doubled up, rescheduled, worked around the elements, played during constant rain. More stormy weather expected the next couple of days, including Tuesday when U of L closes the home season out against Eastern Kentucky.

Bring an umbrella. The game will go on.

Drizzling again most of Sunday in the University of Louisville 8-4 decision over St. John’s, keeping U of L in the chase for the Big East Conference title. With three conference games to go, Dan McDonnell’s team is a half game out of first place.

Stewart Ijames, the missing element with his injured shoulder last season, unfazed by the wet bat handles or soaked baseballs, knocking two of them out of park, collecting six runs batted in. Can’t say it enough: good to see him back.

Louisville closes out the regular season this weekend with three games at Notre Dame while UConn hosts Seton Hall.

Adam Duvall leads Louisville at the plate with a .413 batting average, followed by Stewart Ijames at .375 and Phil Wunderlich at .373. Duvall and Wunderlich also have six home runs.

Actually, more  a destination than a diversion.

Catching Up With Stewart Ijames

One of the pieces missing during the University of Louisville baseball team’s run to the NCAA Super Regional this season was the slugging prowess of Stewart Ijames. The hard hitting outfielder was forced to miss the season with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, affecting his batting and throwing arm.

As a freshman, Ijames batted .351 with eight homers and 39 RBIs. He also recorded 11 doubles, two triples and 98 total bases. His .583 slugging percentage and a .401 on-base percentage speaks loudly about his value to the team.

He was named third team All-Big East and was picked as a freshman All-American by Ping Baseball.

The really good news for coach Dan McDonnell is that Ijames is back on the field this summer, playing in the Coast Plain League for the Thomasville, NC team. He leads the league in home runs with nine in 40 games.

The Owensboro native, who was selected to play in the league’s all-star game, recently pounded out a double and a home run while driving in five runs to lead his team to a 12-6 win over Gastonia.
