Louisville Baseball Eyes Mother’s Day Sweep

The University of Louisville baseball team is off to a good start in their three-game series against conference third-place St. John’s this weekend, having captured the first games by scores of 10-8 and 5-4 over the perennial conference contender.

The Cards are in second place in the conference, and a win on Sunday would set up a showdown of sizable proportions for next weekend with league-leading South Florida coming to Jim Patterson Stadium for a three-game series that will decide the regular season Big East championship.

Freshman Ryan Wright hammered a two-run home run over the wall in left field during the seventh inning in the 10-8 series-opening win on Friday night at St. John’s

  • Louisville’s Chris Dominguez and Phil Wunderlich extended their hitting streaks to 13 and 11, respectively, in the game. Dominguez hammered his team-leading 17th home run and pushed his team-leading RBI total to 67, while Wunderlich moved back to the top of the Cards’ hitting leaders with a .373 average. Dominguez is just behind Wunderlich with a .371 average.
  • After trailing 6-5 and 8-7 on Friday night to the host Red Storm, the Cardinals battled back for their 21st come-from-behind win this season.
  • With his 2-for-5 day at the plate, junior Andrew Clark pushed his batting average to .351 overall and continued an impressive week at the plate. The New Palestine, Ind., native is 9-for-14 in the Cards’ three games this week, all wins, with seven RBI and seven runs scored.

In Saturday’s win, the Cards posted three runs following a lead-off triple by John Dao, who scored after a Drew Haynes singled. Adam Duvall homered to left field, sending Haynes across the plate. Dean Kiekhefer (5-4) picked up the win while Gabriel Shaw recorded his second save.

Chris Dominguez Doing His Thing

So how is Chris Dominguez doing this spring?

The University of Louisville’s consensus All-American baseball player has nine home runs, 40 runs batted in, five doubles, two triples and a batting average of .333. His most impressive outing was against Wisconsin-Milwaukee in early March when he smashed three pitches out of Jim Patterson Stadium, one them a grand slam.grand slam dominguez1 300x182 Chris Dominguez Doing His Thing

With Tuesday’s 15-1 win over Indiana University, the Baseball Cards improved their record to 21-9, matching the best 30-game record for a Dan McDonnell-coached U of L squad, matching the 2007 team with that record. That 2007 team went on to win 47 games and earn the program’s first ever College World Series appearance.

Up next, the Cards play Big East foe Pittsburgh on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the first of a three-game series at Jim Patterson Stadium. Friday’s game is also scheduled for 6 p.m.. The Saturday game is 1 p.m.

They need to start soon building momentum in the Big East Conference where they have five wins against four losses

Football Bloodlines — The Steelers Depot notes that Zach Stoudt, a redshirt freshman quarterback candidate, is the son of former Pittsburgh Steeler backup quarterback Cliff Stoudt. Stoudt completed four of four passes for 94 yards, including a 47-yard pass to Trent Guy and a 20-yard TD throw to Maurice Clark during a recent scrimmage.

More Big East Dominance — With all the NCAA action, the women’s National Invitation Tournament was easy to overlook. The champ was South Florida,  capturing its first postseason basketball title in school history with a 75-71 win over Kansas on KU’s home court in front of 16,113 fans.

Enough Talent? — With more its share of women’s basketball talent, UConn was unbeatable, well beyond the reach of most other schools this  season, prompting this thought from Useless Trivia and Mindless Rants:

“Women’s college basketball also suffers from a “numbers” situation. There are far fewer top level women players compared to men. They aren’t going to get rich by jumping to the WNBA, so they stay for four years. And the majority of this talent goes to several select programs. What we saw UCONN do this year is exhibit A. Where most programs, like Louisville, Rutgers, Pitt, or Maryland, have one or two bonafide superstars UCONN has three, the trinity of Renee Montgomery, Tina Charles, and Maya Moore. And no matter how you split the numbers, three will always be one or two.”

Chris Dominguez Eyes Return To Omaha

Don’t look now but the University of Louisville baseball team opens the 2009 season this Friday with the first game of a three-game series against the University of Florida in Gainesville.cd thumb Chris Dominguez Eyes Return To Omaha

They will be led by senior third baseman Chris Dominguez, who today was selected Preseason First Team All America by Baseball America and Rivals.com. The good-natured native of Miami paced the Cards to 41-21 won-lost record last season, batting .365 with a team-leading 21 home runs, 13 doubles and 75 runs batted in.

Dominguez turned down a offer to play professional baseball last summer after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies. It marked the first time since 2003 that a college player drafted in the fifth round had not signed. He told Baseball America:

“I have no regrets. I don’t live in the past about the decisions I make. Maybe I didn’t get drafted as high as I would’ve liked to. But things happen for a reason …  To have a chance to go back to the College World Series, I think it’s worked out for the better.”

The team returns for its first home game on the 2009 schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 25th against Eastern Kentucky University at Jim Patterson Stadium at 2 p.m.
