The end may be near for the massive silos that border I-65 adjacent to the University of Louisville campus.

The UofL Foundation passed a resolution Tuesday, approving a $3.3 million offer for the 15-acre site previously occupied by Solae LLC, an affiliate of the DuPont Corporation.

Future site for U of L basketball?

Kathleen Smith, an executive assistant to President James Ramsey, said the silos will eventually be razed and the site cleared for future development of the Belknap Campus.

UofL’s master plan recommends that the site be used for academic or research purposes. At one point, Tom Jurich had suggested the site might be an ideal location for an on-campus basketball arena. That, of course, was before UofL was offered a lucrative offer to become the primary tenant at a downtown arena and the KFC Yum! Center was erected.

The removal of the silos will open up a grand vista of the campus, the first impression being an eye-popping view of a new $17 million soccer stadium scheduled to open next fall.
