San Antonio Cuts Candyce Bingham

By Sonja Sykes

The San Antonio Silver Stars waived former University of Louisville forward Candyce Bingham from the roster Monday. Bingham, a third round draft pick, played in one exhibition game with the Silver Stars. San Antonio returned several veteran forwards and also acquired front line depth through trades during the off season.

WNBA teams carry 11 players on each roster and final cut day is  Friday. Although Bingham could be picked up by other teams, most teams are  paring down and Candyce’s chances of being picked up appear to be pretty slim.

Still, options are available. Overseas leagues offer former college stars a chance to continue playing at a livable wage. Also, several exhibition teams tour the country annually playing college women’s basketball teams in preseason games. As of Wednesday, however, Bingham’s future was open …but here’s hoping she gets a chance to continue the game in a venue somewhere if that’s what she really wants to do.

So sorry to hear this. I know she was one of your all time favorites, Mom. One would think there would be a WNBA team out there somewhere who could use the skills and tenacity CB displayed…

I think the WNBA draft was bias from the beginning bc they actually overlooked at one of the most fundamentally sound player in the draft. There were alot of players that I never heard of and their stats were no where near as better than CB. She is one of the hardest worker I have ever known. If no other WNBA team picks CB they will be missing out on a great athlete that can help out right away on any team out there. CB, sorry to hear the bad news but keep your head up and if I was coaching you would be on my team anytime.

Word from the Lady Cards staff is that Candyce is headed back to the Ville to work and practice for a run at Euro hoops. Women players over there can make twice as much as the WNBA players. Jazz Covington, who went that route, is one of the leading scorers and rebounders for her team in Finland. As I mentioned elsewhere, the Silver Stars kept Megan Frazee (so far) who played for Liberty and was totally shut down by Bingham in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. One has to wonder if it is just a matter of time before David Stern pulls the life support plug on the financially crippled WNBA and they’re forced to try and survive without NBA monetary support.

and thats why the silverstars are going to suck…to pick Megan Frazee over Candyce Bingham is a complete joke…if it asnt for Bingham Louisville wouldnt have made it to the finals.

    • Sonja says:

Agreed that Bingham could play circles around Frazee. Sometimes, WNBA rosters keep one or two “fashion queens” on the squad for “eye candy”…at least that’s the rumor. Frazee will appeal to the fans who want to see a tall, white girl from a religious college institution. She did not get on the court during the Silver Stars opening night loss. With her and Becky Hammon on the roster, the Silver Stars have assured that they’ll have a couple of “pinup” girls on the squad…talented be damned. Bring a pillow or seat cushion, Megan…

Is there something wrong with “religious” schools? Would you put Notre Dame in the same category because it is affiliated with Catholicism? Hundreds of religious affiliated schools out there. Students can attend for four years without ever taking a religion class. Sorry if you have something against religion.

    • Angela says:

Nothing at all with religious schools. And, I attend early mass every Sunday. The mention of Frazee and the Liberty connection was meant to show that ability sometimes has nothing to do with a spot on the team.

As Father Bob says, “If we cannot be sometimes critical of our own religion and own relationship to it…than we are no better than the bigots who defame us for our devotion to it or chastise us for questioning it.”

Me thinks you protest a bit too strenuosly…Zagnut.
Your assumption on my feelings toward religion, school that are sponsored by it or teach it is incorrect, rather callow and a challenge to what I believe it and hold dear. In other words, watch your step when making unfounded accusations, pal.
