The script couldn’t have been written any more perfectly for the first showdown this season between the University of Louisville and Kentucky baseball teams.

UK, ranked No. 1 in a couple of polls, riding high with a 30-3 won-lost record, UofL ranked among the top 25 with a 23-7 record.  Teeth-gritting time.

Jared Ruxer, a young freshman righthander from Indianapolis, would turn in a masterful performance, allowing UK batters only three hits in six innings, improving his season record to 5-0.

Louisville would win 12-0, hammering out 17 hits while the best hitting team in the Southeastern Conference could manage only four of them.

Only 11 more home games for the Cards. They return to Big East action this weekend with a three-game series against Seton Hall at Jim Patterson Stadium.

A rematch between UofL and UK occurs Tuesday, April 23. You can bet Jared Ruxer will be on the mound again.

  1. Cats had their week to celebrate the Battle of New Orleans. Now starts the year of The Ville. What a statement on the diamond! Wish I could have been there. Other sports will follow, with the next big highlight being the licking Charlie Strong will put on UK on national TV on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. A regular season basketball victory in The Yum! will portend another run to the Final Four in ATL. The Cats will hope to avoid the Cards in NCAA play, knowing we’ve got their number, as we go on to Roam in the Dome!
