Excerpt from a nice piece about the relationship between Rick Pitino and Russ Smith in the New York Times:

Against New Mexico, the Smith-and-Pitino show hit another peak. In one particularly heated first-half exchange, Pitino screamed at Smith in the huddle, then sent him to the bench. Shortly after, Smith stood up, walked over to Siva and tried to deliver some instruction or encouragement. Pitino, in sharp, R-rated language, told Smith to sit down. Shortly after that, Pitino put Smith back in the game.

Both seem to have met their match.

  1. Keep in mind that the NY Times is in business to sell newspapers and online subscriptions. Controversy sells. Truth, accuracy and relevance are just words from their annual report. I no longer have a parakeet, so I no longer buy their rag.

That said–I believe Rick is smart enough to know the difference between reining in a free spirit and destroying his initiative.

What is it that is going to beat MSU (alias Moo U)? Count on Rick to have that figured out and to do his darnedest to bring it.
