Some surprises awaited the observer during his Tuesday evening stop by Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Something new, not included in the architectural renderings, is being added to the new second level. Extending from the top of the stadium addition is the beginning of a series of beams.

They will elicit discussion, no doubt about it. Are they to provide shelter for a limited number of patrons? Aesthetic purposes? Trellis for ivy? Safety reasons? What?

Good to see quarterbacks and wide receivers from the University of Louisville football team getting in some work on the field. Rumor had it Coach Charlie Strong wasn’t going to let players near the field for a while. So much for that one.

    1. I will have to wait and see myself because a lot of thought and effort has gone into this design. I wouldn’t write it off too quickly.

      1. Who was writing it off? I was just stating what was said, and Scull was concerned with bird related issues, and we were joking about it.

Scull has been the stadium manager for 11 years:

In his 11th season as stadium manager for Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, K.C. Scull brings a wealth of experience to the U of L athletic department.

Scull joined the Cardinals in the spring of 1997 after serving five years as the deputy director of athletics at the U.S. Military Academy. In his current position, Scull oversees the day-to-day operation of PJCS and the Brown and Williamson Club, including scheduling and management of athletic events, public gatherings, corporate and private activities, and concerts. He also currently serves as an adjunct professor for the U of L Sports Administration graduate and undergraduate degree programs.

        1. I don’t think Zagnut was criticizing you Shannon. But there will be criticism from some of the hard asses who have never seen anything like that on a football stadium. Some of that you can take with a grain of salt. Maybe it just diverts them from criticizing something else, you know.

  1. I spoke to KC Scull yesterday in the press box at Jim Patterson for the IU game, and Howie Lindsey and I was talking to Scull about that exact issue. KC says that it was a late addition, and I think it is to keep people from being able to throw things off the upper deck in some fashion. A joke was made that, “They would have to lob objects over it like a grenade” if they wanted to throw something.

I know Scull did not seem too happy about it, and stated that in his opinion, it looked like a place for birds to roost and hang out, and made the statement afterward, “At least it is the right color” (white, the color of bird poop).

Glad I am not sitting under that new “whatever it is supposed to do” addition.

I agree with KC. Looks like a great perch for birds to perch and bomb the fans with rectal gifts in the upper deck.
